The cries for help were barely audible. The children. The school children were trapped under tons of debris. They were trapped on their own seats. Their school became hell. No it was not supposed to be like this.

On top of the rubble walked crying parents. Without heavy equipment, they were removing rocks one by one. They were trying to dig their way to these kids. Their hearts were racing. They were dying inside knowing that their loved ones, their own children were trapped under these debris. Such was the race for life in the rescue efforts in Pakistan, India and specifically Kashmir.

The French and English rescuers arrived on the scene. They started helping out. A faint noise could be heard. They dug their way to a boy who was still alive. He was protected by an air pocket. They retrieved him and gave him to his waiting and anxious parents. As soon as they saw him, they called his name, climbed carefully from the rubble to embrace him. The rescuers could hear more noise coming out of the rubble. They knew that they had only seconds or minutes to reach these trapped kids.

The children were more likely alive after two days. They were waiting for help. They may have been waiting in air pockets. Getting to them was the hardest part. They may have done through this training many times. They may have practiced what was taught to them. But the 7.6 quake caused too much destruction to leave a space to get to them. More than 1,500 children were believed to be under this rubble. Elsewhere and everywhere, many other individuals, mothers, fathers, siblings were also trapped. They were trapped just like the Guatemalans were trapped alive under tons of debris or mudslides. There was no roof to climb to. It was not floodwater. The floodwaters appeared elsewhere.

Then, the rescuers started hearing less noise coming out of the rubble. 1, 500 children were still there the 3rd and 4th days. On the 5th day, numerous other children were rescued. They were miraculously in good shape. The others, injured or not, may still be in the same condition.

In the end, one by one, their cries stopped. Thousands of children and other survivors may have perished. They died for lack of access to them. They died waiting for help. They died because they could not do much to help themselves. They died and left grieving parents.

We, parents and witnesses of this tragedy, weep too. We cry over the mudslide victims of Guatemala. We weep over the losses of lives in India and Pakistan. Our tears will move us to action. We want to contribute to the relief efforts. Would you not try too?

Do abortions contribute to the lowering of the crime rate in this country? This question was being debated in Slate Magazine six yers ago by Dr. Steven D. Levitt, author of "Freakonomics" that became a bestseller. But now we may have an answer from a well-known source. Let's say it's a troubling one. It makes us ask the questions of whether these talk show formats are conducive to the discussion of such hardcore issues as race, abortions etc.

Author of many books including the 1993 best seller "The Book of Virtues," former education secretary in the Reagan administration, former director of drug policy during George H.W. Bush's administration, and current talk show host, William Bennett, is a well-known public figure. He talked about the potential of reducing crime by aborting all black children.

"I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," radio talk show host Bennett said in his broadcast.
"That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do but your crime rate wuld go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."

Going on FoxNews, Bennett tried to defend his position. Well, he tried to explain himself. But his clarification did not prevent many high officials to disapprove his remarks. Bennett is now in the doghouse. He fell out of grace. Will people rush to buy his books for just this one mistake?

It seems that he was insinuating that crimes in America can reduced by less black people around. After Katrina, these statements can really scare folks!

Oprah made some announcements about helping to rebuild New Orleans. Her Angel Katrina Homes may be the only chance for poor NOLA residents to return to the Crescent City

Oprah is back on her show. While it was off, she was forced to come out to make a few statements about some incidents, but she was on vacation. The show was scheduled for the September relaunch. Indeed, it got relaunched with a spanking brand new studio which costs millions of dollars and hours to design and build. It's truly an architectural signature of Oprah. (I will disclose here that like many women I am a fan of the show. More importantly, I am fan of the projects Oprah supports).

When the picture of Jennifer Anniston showed up on the screen, the fans went nuts. They finally had a chance to see her and hear her talk about her ordeals. Talk, she did! Oprah interviewed her on the show. "Are you ready to date again? Are you ready to go on with your life?" She also mentioned the Vanity Fair magazine that featured Brad Pitt's former wife. Jennifer was very candid in her response. "It takes some getting used to being alone again," she said. To refute and put down all rumors, she wants a baby. Jennifer receives the support of her friends who were at Oprah's house in California. They are her lifeline or support system. Jennifer is very busy making movies. One of the titles of her upcoming movies is "The Breakup." What a coincidence! Jennifer is moving on.

Oprah and Steman, her man: They went puppy shopping. They initially agreed to take one each, but Oprah had to get the cute one with the underbite that the puppy seller was trying to discourage her. So the power couple ended up leaving with three beautiful white puppies. They are drop gorgeous. Then, Oprah showed how she was losing sleep potty trainingt these new babies which she did not compare to human babies. She had to introduce them to her previous dogs. To train these new puppies that made their entrance on the show, she hired a trainer. They needed manners. Hey, Oprah can have all the toys she wants! Come on, Stedman, shop like a girl! No wonder Oprah usually has her girlfriends around to go shopping!

Talking about shopping, Oprah said she did not have a cow or throw a fit when she was refused entrance at a Hermes store in Paris. She showed all the articles that were written about the incident. She said that the press had it wrong. Then, she decided to talk about the whole incident in a polite way. She and her entourage wer already inside the store and saw a lot of other people shopping. Despite her efforts to shop, a RUDE employee turned her down. She stated that she felt bad. She felt awful. Then the camera went to Hermes USA president, Mr. Chavez. On the way out of the store, Oprah called him to express her surprise. Mr. Chavez said that he understood her situation. He apologized. That's all Oprah wanted to hear. He added that the worker did not know Oprah. It seems that you have to have a name to shop there. What was interesting to note is that Oprah said it the way she felt it. "For those of you who are not the right kind, the right skin color or the right class, you can understand how awful it feels to be turned down." Hermes USA president made up with Oprah. Well, she has money and power. Oprah is an influencer. Who does not want to kiss her face or shake her hands! oprah, you should have stood up for all the poor people, the black people, the Asian, Hispanic or people of color who have ever received an affront or considered suspicious the minute they set their feet at these highend, upscale stores! Will you do it next time? Be strong and don't take ... from anybody. I understand that you still have to offer an olive branch to your enemy. Hermes may end up taking some advertising pages in your magazines to cover its sins against people of color!

Oprah Pledged $10 million dollars towards the rebuilding of NOLA

Through her Angel Network Katrina Homes on Oprah.com, Oprah invites her fans and viewers to "put your money where your heart is." She wants everybody to give what they can. Maybe it's a toaster, beds, linens, sofas, towels, dishes, washers, dryers that you can afford. She wants you to turn houses into homes. Corporations can give too. Through her Katrina registry, you can give whatever you can afford. You can make a house a home. You can help rebuild lives. You can sponsor a house. Oprah's Angel Network will help rebuild homes with Habitat for Humanity. On the Oprah's Katrina Home Registry, you can choose items to donate. The items are just representative of the things that are needed in a home. You can find kitchen, bedroom, living room, bathroom item list and appliances. While you are there, you can also donate to the network's recovery efforts.

Oprah Did Not Snub John H. Johnson in his Death as Alleged by Columnist/editor

Oprah was not around when Ebony and Jet publisher, John H. Johnson, died on August 8. She was in Hawaii. She has the right to be furious over the allegation that she was snubbing late Mr. Johnson and his survivors for not attending the funerals. Did not Mr. Roland S. Martin know that Oprah tends to honor the living? She'd rather offer people, poor and rich people flowers during their days on earth instead of doing anything else. Oprah did for Mr. Johnson what she never does for anybody else. Mr. Johonson called her to endorse some of the books published by his company. She did it. Any way, let's go back to the merits of the two columns published the Chicago Defender newspaper and its online version (Chicagodefender.com).

Mr. Martin is a columnist. He needed something to write about. So he decided to cover the funerals and memories of John H. Johnson, the founder of Ebony and Jet magazines. We'll admit Mr. Johnson was a very remarkable man, a Goliath in the black business category. Well, he was somebody to admire in all business categories. There's no boxing him up here. He was larger than life if you consider what he had to do and specially when he did it. Yes, in many ways, he could be seen as one of the pioneers. Writing about such an individual is very deserving. What Mr. Martin was observing was the number of African-American celebrities who were in attendance. He looked around and saw such top African American media moguls as BET founder Bob Johnson, Black Enterprise founder, Earl Johnson, Radio One founder Cathy Hughes, Essence Communications co-founder Ed Lewis, Time Warner chairman and CEO Dick Parsons, TV One CEO Jonathan Rodgers, TV host Tavis Smiley, nationally syndicated radio host, Tom Joyner, de Passe Entertainment president, Suzanne de Passe, Bryan Monroe, president, National association of Black Journalists etc. He was somewhat satisfied. He observed one important absence. He was not happy about it. The Queen of all media, the self-made African American royalty was not in attendance. How dare she! Maybe many of the others took notes too. This may be the customs in the funerals of celebrities. Attendees come not to honor the memories of the deceased, but to check each other out, what types of expensive clothes and jewelry pieces they are wearing. The gossip never dies either. Oprah is not into gossip. She was busy in Hawaii. She was taking care of business.

Tears are subliminal. They connect us to the human race. They make us human. They prove our emotional intelligence. Stoic, this black woman cries over the loss of her city. She cries over the uncertain tomorrow. She breaks down and cries. Despite the poor conditions she may have kown, she never cried. She knew tomorrow would be better. She continued to look forward. She continued to keep her eyes on the prize. Just like any woman, she prized security and safety. She protects her own. No wonder that, in any natural or man-made calamities, women are the ones who suffer the most. This black woman is reflecting on the trail of tears. She knows she can't stay put. The waters are rising. She forces her way to the attic. All her children are already up there. The waters took over the attic. She knows she has to break open the roof to take her family to safety. With her bare hands and lots of courage, she is willing to keep trying in the darkness, cold and rainy days of the hurricane. She has to get on the trail to nowhere. The trail of hell. The trail of abject deprivation.

Reporters Gone Wild: Reporters Moved by Katrina's Waves of Pain, Horror, Despair and Misery Lash Out

Stung by the ravages of Katrina-induced flooding of New Orleans, Biloxi and other Gulf coast areas, reporters from the National Press Corps feel it's time to wake up and speak up. Talk, they have been doing so! From NBC's Brian Williams to ABC's Ted Koppel, Meet The Press's Tim Russert to MSNBC's Geraldo Rivera, reporters were seen reporting the misery of the poor black and white residents of New Orleans. On many occasions, they lent a hand to those who needed water or food. For them, the slumber party is over. They forget about the restrictions of the Patriot acts. All they care about is that attention be given to these American citizens stranded on rooftops and wading through chest-deep water. Brian Williams even spent some time with the evacuees in the Superdome. Geraldo Rivera was seen participating or accompanying many rescue missions. He did rescue a woman who did not want to leave her dog behind.

Salon.com uses the power of the Internet to show some footage collected during the coverage of Katrina's floodings of New Orleans and elsewhere.

These news correspondents, national and international reporters witnessed the devastation and the slow response to Katrina. They are at a loss for words at some point. Many of them are outraged. They expected to see such pictures of despair, waves of horror, uncollected dead bodies in places such as Haiti, Mogadishu, Irag and other places. They were not ready to see them in New Orleans, the party city of many of them.

Geraldo cried. It was genuine weeping. He wept over the hungry babies. He wept over the faces of despair on the strong black men and women. He wept over the slow response to those stranded on rooftops. He cried over the dead bodies swimming by. But he reported. He covered the facts. He rescued. He hugged and kissed those who were locked in their own prison. They were locked in by piles of debris and rising waters.

Shepard Smith was frustrated. So was Tim Russert who never backed down from asking the hard, tough questions du jour. His integrity is intact. He had the ears of the Washington elite, the political powerful elite of the nation's capital. They were willing to listen to the cry for help of these desperate folks of New Orleans.

From New York Times, New York Observer, Washington Post, BBC and Slate to countless other major metropolitan papers and magazines, the pligght of New Orleans evacuees was center stage. They had their 5 days in hell. They were the features of the day.

Oprah and her friends of the Angel Network cried. Mayor Ray Nagin grew more frustrated. The world was watching. Nobody was sure there were so many black people who depended on public transportation in the city of New Orleans. They were left behind. They were left to the fury of the storm. Katrina's eyes were on them. They had them locked in for destruction.

Parents are calling this new line of revealing, x-treme prom dresses by Rick Yeh a bit too much. Most of them don’t want any of these dresses on their daughters. Yet, after a model wore the wrong dress at a fashion show, this line of extreme, body-showing dresses has soon become a best-seller. “They are selling like hot cakes,” said a store owner. “We can’t just keep up with the demand. We are already down on our inventory.” confided another one. My sister and I saw them last Tuesday on the NBC's Today Show with Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Al. The line of skimpy prom dresses aimed at teenage girls has had the parents put their feet down, “Not on my daughter. Not a cent of my money will be spent on this.” Yet, the teens who rebel against everything parents say are buying them to wear at their prom. Can’t the parents prevent them from buying and wearing them? That’s two different things.

A lot of girls who bought them want to have them to be able to brag to their friends. They want to show their independence. They kind of want to egg on those whose parents have a tighter control of the leash or the boat. Teens are teens, and they will find a way to wear them.

Now, the real challenge will be for the chaperones to monitor what’s going on the dance floor. These kids will drive school principals, chaperones and parents crazy as they get ready to freak dance. For the uninitiated, freak dancing is what the name suggests. The young lady is bumping and grinding against the genital areas of the young man in a very suggestive manner. The power of the drum and music beat, rhythm get both of them drunk without the beverages that may exist in and around such environments. Parents are afraid that such dancing travesty and bend-down low movements may not leave much dress to cover their daughter’s body. “It’s like throwing a match to a gallon of fuel.” Freak dancing is physical and leaves everything in the open. There is nothing to hide. In the meantime, the young males are flattered by the attention of the naïve, innocent young females. It’s the same type of preventive action taken by a Lemoore High school in California. He is determined not to allow freak dancing on school-sponsored dances. No wonder he came under fire from the high school kids who say that “he just doesn’t understand.”

Maybe those wearing Rick Yeh’s prom dresses won’t be allowed on the dance floor. In the meantime, Rick Yeh is saying , “It’s the value, choice, decision of the young lady and her parents. As somebody in business in the Fashion industry, I need to provide for the demand of the public.” On the Today show, Katie Couric said, “Maybe it’s the delayed influence of these classy celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Sean P. Diddy.”

Now the question is how much skin can high school girls reveal. Parents are the only arbiters, judges in this case. If they have not lost all sort of control over their kids, they should be able to intervene. Will their daughters listen and appreciate their taste in clothing or anything that makes them more beautiful? Most likely not.

Meanwhile, Yeh will continue to make tons of money from mistake that allowed a model to wear the wrong prom dress at a prom show in Texas. Most parents and school principals may continue the debate over what’s appropriate to wear to school this year and many more years to come.

Katrina Karnival Relief Efforts: Remember the Good Ole Times in New Orleans!

In front of the aftermath of Katrina, criticism is sure to come from various sources. Last night, it came live from NBC’s Concert for Hurricane Relief.

Various famous sons and daughters of New Orleans and other affected areas participated, performed, and entertained the public while asking them to contribute to the Red Cross. Matt Lauer of NBC’s Today Show, was the emcee or host. The show was a simulcast from New York on NBC, CNBC, MSNBC and Pax.

Louisiana Native Tim McGraw sang two songs and signed a Gibson Les Paul guitar to be auctioned.

Mississippi native Faith Hill sang “There Will Come A Time.” The lyrics were very comforting to those who were watching “The darkness shall be gone; the weak will be strong. Hold on to your faith.”

Some of the other speakers include Richard Gere, Eric LaSalle, Glenn Close, Lindsay Lohan, John Goodman and Leonard DiCaprio.

Aaron Neville, a New Orleans native, sang Randy Newman’s soulful “Louisiana 1927.” The chorus goes like this, “They are trying to wash us away. They are trying to wash us away.”

But the surprise of the night came from Kanye West who had an outburst of criticism. He went unscripted. He wanted to connect with the suffering and spoke his mind about the portrayal of Black, African American survivors of the hurricane and floods. The Grammy-winning rapper’s comments were broadcast live to the East Coast. The viewers could have heard everything. He talked to them.

Kanye West expressed his feelings and observations as reported by a CNN reporter about the poor, the African-Americans and the older folks. "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food." The actor is trying to build some consciousness in the rest of America. He continued his rant, “George Bush doesn't care about black people. America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible." After that, he invited the audience to donate to the cause of the relief.

It appears that Kanye West said what others, the frustrated refugees of the Superdome and the Convention and those who know the history of this country, specially, that of the South could not dare say.

But nobody unleashed the fury of Hurricane Katrina against any specific group of people. Everybody is equal before the devastation and resulted suffering of natural disasters. Natural disasters can’t hide the truth. The whole world came in contact with the poor and disenfranchised among us. The way we, people and government respond to those in crisis will tell others a lot about our values. Social compassion is the name of the game. Leadership will help figure out what needs to be done in the days ahead. Now is the time to start anew. Now is the time to value each and every citizen of this great, rich and last super power. The day has come when the military resources and best soldiers and generals of this country are put to use in a war against hunger, poverty, lack of healthcare and discrimination. The day has finally come when everybody will count, when all citizens, black or white and of any hue or skin pigmentation will not be known by what they have but by what they are, human beings, our brothers and sisters. The day has come when the mightiest military forces are reduced to social work, caring about the poor, the disabled and the sick among us.

The social work component of the US military has long been defined by events such as the Asian tsunami and countless sorties into Latin America etc. People come first. Anything else is secondary.

Kanye West claimed that the government is deliberately dragging its feet by not doing much to jump to the rescue and support of these displaced masses. Reflecting on the looting and the state of chaos that took place in New Orleans, he said that “they have given them permission to come down and shoot us.”

We believe that the USA, this country of ours will not leave one of her own behind on the battlefield of despair, hunger, scarcity amidst abundance, sickness when we have the best medications around. We will believe that an appropriate investment in people will go a long way and benefit human kind.

May the day come fast when love will replace lawlessness, when everybody will rise in unison to sing and rejoice. “For the Lord has made a new day.”

We believe that the South will rise again. This time, it will and must rise with everybody. Historical inequities will be corrected. New Orleans will become a new playing field for the sons of the rich, poor and new immigrants. The new levees will protect all the residents of the Crescent city.

In the end, President Bush’s compassion and leadership will carry the colossal works of reconstruction to fruition. He will whip his administration into shape. FEMA will shape up. If any, the blame will be equally shared by the state of Louisiana, local governments and the rest of the federal systems. Mr. Bush has already said that the early results and response to the victims are unacceptable. This is his place to shine. Shine, Mr. President, to show the despair of the unfortunate among us. Si se puede! You can do it. Who else can we turn to? We'll be with you along the way!

Leonardo's model girlfriend, Gisele Bundchen, wore a strapless muumuu designed by Dior.

We must give credits to Oprah. She wore a nice yellowish dress that highlights her curves. Yes, she has lost weight. She is conquering the beast! Kudos for Oprah!

How about Halle Berry? She wore a gown with strap that left every participant surprised. She was gorgeous and impeccable! Fashion observers are saying that she was one of the best dressed ladies on the red carpet last night.

Beyonce sang three songs. The first song she sang, Chantier de Gloire, she wore a tight dress that Jay-Z may have helped her pick. He had a good seat to watch her lady. For the records, the song was in French. Makes you wonder whether she had a crash course in French!

Kate Blanchett who won an award for Best Supporting Actress(The Aviator), wore a yellow flowing dress with left strap and brotch to accentuate things. The train was spectacular.

Scarlet Johansen wore a long black dress that highlights her body's best assests. The dress was a compliment to her nice frame.

Kudos for Sharon Davis, costume designer chronicling the highs and lows of Ray Charles. Jamie won the top award, Best Actor, for the movie.

Zana Breski's beautiful long flowing dress shows her lean body.

Penelope Cruz and Selma Hayek wore gowns that accentuate the latin flavor of the Oscar. True women of power in Hollywood!

Hilary Swank's dark blue dress with a V back running all the way down to her tailbone showed the glorious and elegant side of the night. With that dress,she was saying, "Who cares?" I am going to get the best award. She was gracious and beautiful. We just hope that more of her back was shown to the public. The camera guys did a quick job on her. Should this dress be recommended by Quincenera?

FedEx is unhappy about this dude's use of its trademark boxes. Well, Jose moved and had all these boxes. He did not have money to buy new furniture. So he decided to recycle these boxes by making furniture. He made a FedEx bed, a FedEx table, corner tables, chairs and couches. For the past few weeks, he has been hailed as a very creative guy who is giving lots of publicity to FedEx. I saw him on the Today Show. Now that's something. Wired Magazine (wired.com) covered him unde the title of "Furniture Causes FedEx Fits."

FedEx lawyers sent a C & D letter to Avila. He needed to close down the site and blog. Jose got some reprieve when the lawyers at the Stanford Law School for Internet and Society decide to take his case. Now, we have the battle of David vs. Goliath. Who will win? and what will happen to Mr. Avila's site. It is up and running. No trouble.

Jon Stewart from Comedy has not gone after "Bring Back The Couch." On a few shows, he even mentions the weblog in its efforts to bring back the former furnitures. It's all in good gesture and fun. Maybe the only difference, the operator of Bring Back the Couch did not use the name of Jon Stewart show. Next time, we may have cocacolafurniture.com etc.

It's great to watch. FedEx stands by its request for Mr. Avila to take down the site alledging that he had violated DMCA which applies to copyrighted materials.

This is great litigation between the two camps.

Pat Robertson's Comments About Venezuelan President Hug Chavez

Pat Robertson is getting the flacks for his comments about the Venezuelan president. The Venezuelan ambassador responded to his comments. He is slamming Pat and his Christian Broadcasting network. The US evangelist is making a lot missionaries working in South and Central Americas uncomfortable. Venezuela has a leverage. The country has a lot of oil which could be exported to the US to reduce the costs of gas in the country.

Nobody knows for sure what pushed Pat to use such strong statements agains the Venezuelan leader.

Robertson said on the Christian Broadcast Network's "The 700 Club": "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability."

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Pat is a private citizen who can make all types of statements. He is not talking for the United States. In fact, most Christian groups denounce his flames thrown against Hugo Chavez.

What has been happening to the voices of the Christians these days?

Pat is talking about criminal actions. BTK terrorized his community. When he was caught, he testified. He said he was church guy. In fact his brother who is a pastor attended his sentencing.

Pat can't go around and call for the assassination of important foreign people. What's coming out of the mouth of the church man?

They don’t need to worry about the new interests in normal women. Among the curvy women, only those who are muscular, atheletic will have a chance in the industry. There are barriers that still need to come down before they become supermodels. Mo’Nique’s Second Chances show is a first step. A staple of Oh or Oxygen owned by Oprah Winfrey, the show featuring F.A.T ladies crowned its first “Miss FAT 2005.” Joanne Borgella got the prize and honor. We just hope she gets some deals just like the ladies of Sports Illustrated, Maxim, Elle and For Him.

The evacuation by israeli securities of the Jewish settlers out of Gaza shows the true face of the Israeli soldier. He is most likely to be a son, a father, a brother, a neighbor, a cousin or a good friend. But he remains a disciplined force even when the orders pit him against his own blood, his own people. The prime minister asked the angry settlers to blame him and not to hurt the soldiers who are carrying this historic mission. He recognizes how difficult it is for everybody involved. Just like the US forces went en mass to the quake-ravaged zones of Asia, more and more military forces are doing or completind missions that would fall under the banner of social work. The new soldier is one who believes in people, connects with them and remains highly focused on the goals despite insults and obstacles as those shown in these pictures and others.

The brother-soldier reaches out to his sister-protester. Their hearts sob and connect through their pain in a way that only those who have been landless can understand. Many of these young men and women soldiers may have been born in Gaza, but their parents never stop telling them of the countries they had emigrated from. The only recourse is that they know that they have a place, a country they can go to. Israel is their land!

Israeli Troops move in to remove protesting settlers from Gaza. Amid cries of "Jews don't expel Jews" to thoughts of the holocaust when the police start delivering containers full of police on top of the synagogue where resistants were holing up, everybody in Israel and all Israeli sympathizers have realized how tense these situations are. With these images, Israel has taken steps to give back to the Palestinians their land. Forced removal from Gaza is the norm. Those who are forcibly removed will lose some of their resettlement monies. Security forces storm other synagogues to evacuate protesters. Water canon vehicles are also brought in amid the rock throwing, hugs, human chains and defiance of the settlers. Observers are saying that this is a first by the jewish state in that it orchestrates the expulsion of its own people from a land which will become part of the Palestinian state. What is clear is that Israel starts taking steps to recognize the rights of a Palestinian state.

Farewell to one of the most famous Canadian-born man of faith, farewell to Peter Jennings! Farewell to the love of his life, the news he has presented from Canada to the USA, from Lebanon to England and from the anchor chair of ABC. Farewell to a man who has done so much with what he had. Farewell to a man who discovered the value of a high school education and had regrets for not having a college education. Farewell to a journalist who was sentimental and had his own ideas! Farewell to a man's man, a man who had his ups and downs.

Peter Jennings' funeral is not over yet. Yet, the talks about his replacement are already on. Who is going to replace him at ABC? Tom Brokaw was replaced by Brian Williams at NBC. Dan Rather has long gone from NBC. There's been talk about Katie Couric taking over the anchor chair vacated by Dan Rather. Elizabeth Vargas has the experience. So does Charles Gibson who is a veteran of the station.

The nominations are already in. We now know some of the hot shows on TV. ABC and CBS appear to be the early winners with all 15 nominations a piece. ABC's "Desperate Housewives" and CBS's "Will and Grace" received 15 nominations during the Thursday announcement. However, it must be noted that HBO's "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" and "Warm Springs" had a total of 16 nominations. That's not so bad for HBO in its efforts to get this year's honor which will be bestowed by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on September 18.

Al Gore is his "own man." He managed to recreate himself among the youth of this country. He realized that to be cool, he needs to do something that will place in interactivity with the 18 to 34 years old crowd. That's why his group of investors and he poured some dough in Current TV. This new station is supposed to go live today. Al Gore is very ambitious and wants his new network to be "the television homepage for the Internet generation."

Hmmm, we'll see. There again, it may become just that if it does not renege on its promises. It wants viewers, videobloggers types to provide original content to the network, but they would have to abide by a 3-month exclusivity clause. It was initially 6 months exclusivity. Videobloggers started criticising the network for wanting so much out of their creation. Videobloggers live to publish their stuff on their site. Someone is telling them that they can't do it. Current TV Network initially said that it would distribute free video equipment to 200 people. Then, they decided to reject this plan. Gore felt he did not want to create an elite of 200 videobloggers. Yes, that's democracy! Equal playing field! Will that translate into incomes for the network?

Current TV Network will take advantage of a podcasting. Most of its programming will be in pods. The station's pods will cover current news, technology, health, spirituality and political bytes.

Sitcom star and superstar Brooke Shields talks about her bouts with postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, Francis Rowan, in 2003. It must be noted that she is a an example to millions of women who may be hit by this sudden type of disabling condition. After reading, I realized how lucky I was as a mother of 3 beautiful kids for not going through this.

I think that this book is going to help many women in the world. In fact, Brooke was down to earth in reporting her tribulations with postpartum depression. In the book, the author also talked about her recovery and how psychiatry and medication have helped her tremendously. She had to make between seeking help and continuing to act as everything was fine. She decided to get help and get on Paxil. In the book, Brooke talked about her battles with the demons of postpartum depression. She talked about her struggle and the expectations she had for herself. More importantly, she talked about the role played by her husband, friends and those close to her. Just like any new mom, she wanted to do the best for her daughter and her family, but she had to deal with the debilitating effects of Postpartum depression first. She came to realize that therapy, time and medication could offer her the answer to this troubling moment in her life. She was not thinking about religion. She was not out to be an example of those who push drugs. She was seeking to improve her life.

By writing this book and deciding to come out, Brooke wants to reclaim her life. At the same time, she wants to help other women who find themselves in this situation. She does not seem to care about her famous friends or stars will say. With such a heavy, important topic, Brooke did a good job of conveying the right message about it. With a great sense of humor, she presented the right information about the situation.

What has been happening since the book publication?

Any publicity is good publicity for this book in this case. Brooke has been getting it from a mega star who is trying to eclipse the sales of the book. It may not happen despite his power. Women are saying that they can relate and know best. They are not letting a man tell them what and how they should live their lives.

Lo and behold, Tom Cruise (War of the Worlds star who recently got engaged to Katie Holmes) has been talking about his stance against psychiatry. On the Insider, Today Show and various other TV programs, the star has never hesitated to present his negative views of psychiatry. These tv shows have shown him criticising Brooke Shields for going on Paxil.

Brooke is also taking her fight to speak her mind in the media. She is fighting back. She calls Tom Cruise's appearance on the Today show a "ridiculous rant" in a an Op-Ed in the New York Times. Here's the gist of Tom's arguments, " 'You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do,' Cruise told Matt Lauer.

He went on to say there was no such thing as chemical imbalances that need to be corrected with drugs, and that depression could be treated with exercise and vitamins."

Brooke has starred in films such as Pretty Baby, Blue Lagoon, Black and White. She was also in plays such as the Vagina Monologues and Cabaret.

Down Came the Rain is a must read. It's also a great present idea.

NBC's "The Law Firm" Trial Lawyers Litigate Their Cases; Judge Howard Broadman & Roy Black Give Credibility to Reality Show

Twelve hot shot young lawyers are participating in "The Law Firm" under famed lawyer Roy Black. Being a fan of "Ally McBeal," "Boston Legal," The Firm by David E. Kelley and relying on the tremendous credibility of Roy Black, I decided to watch the premiere of "The Law Firm." It turned out to be one whole hour of fun, laugh and getting familiar with the theatrics of court.

I laughed a lot when the lawyers representing the plaintiff with the three-legged dog which stuck its neck through the fence of the mastiffs owned by the defendant. Having received their case from Roy Black, the lawyers were instructed to open the portfolios which were on the table. This is not a game. The show presents real lawyers, real cases, and real consequences. Real people bring complaints against their neighbors. The other case was about the coroner who decided to stop a female driver who complained that the coroner flashed his light, turned on the siren and demanded her licence. The interesting parts of the show have to do with the prepaarations of the case, the in-fighting, the ego trip, the loud mouth and the lack of legal maneuvers by the young Asian lawyer who ended up being the first to be dismissed from the show due to lack of performance and know-how. I wonder whether she'll be able to get a job later on. She was relying mostly on notes. She could not ad lib for anything. She was being shaken down by the judge who asked questions she hardly answered. Her team won, but she was let go because of her incompetence.

We also saw the rise of three lawyers who became the cream of the crop. Deep, Chris, the African American prosecutor and another lawyer.

Besides Roy Black, Howard Broadman, a former Tulare County Superior court Judge will appear in three episodes of the show. The TV judge is familiar with controversy. In 1991, he made headlines when he ordered a woman guilty of felony child abuse to use Norplant birth control. This case was appealed, and the woman did not have to wear the Norplant treatment. In March, 1991, a Tulare rancher named Harry Bodine pulled out his .357-caliber Magnum and fired one shot at Broadman. It missed the Judge's head by inches. Judge Broadman decided to retire and go into private practice after this near miss. He is a brave judge who will speak his mind.

Then, there was the bench slapping of the lawyer who tried to prevent the Mastiff dog owner to testify. He was trying to control him. The judge took offense. Then, there was the lawyer who confessed to being wrong when he said something foolish. He was later dismissed from the show. The show is different from Survivor, The Apprentice and other reality tv shows in that it requires the lawyer to use their brain, common sense and good rapport with the clients and other colleagues.

It's a show to watch on NBC.
